Photo of the Day: Throwin’ Down at the ‘stick circa 1965

Juan Marichal going after John Roseboro at Candlestick Park, August 22, 1965.

Marichal threw brushback pitches to Dodgers hitters Maury Wills and Ron Fairly. Sandy Koufax, the Dodgers ace, did not brushback any Giants hitters in retaliation, but Dodger backstop John Roseboro got even with Marichal.

“When Marichal came up to bat, I tried a knockdown from behind the plate, throwing the ball close to his nose when I returned it to the pitcher,” recalled Roseboro. “I expected Marichal to attack me in some way. If he had said anything to me, I had studied karate, and I was ready to annihilate him.”

Roseboro must not have ate his Wheaties that day, because Marichal attacked with his bat and Roseboro would need 14 stitches.
